A Russian citizen has been detained in Poland. He was photographing railway infrastructure
Police detained a 55-year-old Russian citizen in the Polish city of Świdnica. He is suspected of acting on behalf of a foreign intelligence service, RMF24 reports.
Police found hundreds of thousands of photographs on the man’s devices showing various locations and important communications infrastructure, taken in countries including Poland.
The man attracted police attention while sitting in a car parked near a railway crossing. When he noticed the officers, he quickly reversed and drove away. The officers went in the same direction and spotted the same car again, this time near a railway bridge.
The man, who was standing next to the car, became nervous when he saw the officers and tried to return quickly to his vehicle. A search revealed that he was carrying professional photographic equipment, which he used to photograph railway and communications infrastructure.
The 55-year-old was detained and subsequently charged with acting on behalf of a foreign intelligence service. The Russian citizen will now spend the next three months in custody.
