“We Were Killed.” Novaya Gazeta Announces It Will Cease Operations
Novaya Gazeta announced that it will cease operations on November 9. On that day, the editorial staff must leave its Moscow office in Potapovsky Lane.
“On November 9, we will turn off the lights in our home, where we have spent 30 years, shut down the servers, and leave. The newspaper is no more. The Russian authorities and security services have forced the editorial staff to cease operations,”
the statement says.
The editorial staff writes that its system for receiving donations from readers was shut down at the same time as the eviction. Novaya Gazeta describes what is happening as a “coordinated operation.”
“This is not just our own story. It is the story of a country and a society that are being finished off in exactly the same way. The FSB, the Justice Ministry, the prosecutor’s office and others who have privatized the state and usurped power are doing it,”
the journalists wrote.
The museum dedicated to Novaya Gazeta columnist Anna Politkovskaya will also close. It opened in 2021 in her former office, room 307. Politkovskaya was shot dead on October 7, 2006, in the elevator of her apartment building in Moscow. Her desk, computer, glasses, letters and other personal belongings have been preserved in the museum.
The final issue of Novaya Gazeta will be published.
