Unbreakable. A statement from Meduza’s editors and other journalists in support of Novaya Gazeta

Novaya Gazeta has announced that it is closing. We never thought we would have to write those words — and yet, this is reality. The story of the most important independent publication in modern Russia has come to an end.

Novaya was a unique newspaper from its founding to the very end. There is no other newsroom with a curriculum vitae like it: a list of phenomenal investigations and outstanding articles, a list of awards, including Dmitry Muratov’s Nobel Prize, and a list of murdered journalists.

By every measure, it was the best media outlet in Russia’s history. In keeping with that status, Novaya Gazeta was the only major independent outlet that continued to operate inside the country after 2022, in defiance of wartime censorship, dictatorship, and the instinct for self-preservation.

We admire your dedication to your profession. We thank you for everything. And we promise to carry on your work for as long as we can. We also know that you are unbreakable and never give up. You will surely find a way forward, as you have done more than once before.

That is why we refuse to say goodbye to you. Novaya Gazeta will not disappear.
