A decision has been made not to restore the Russian fleet’s most powerful strike ship, the nuclear-powered cruiser Pyotr Veliky, because of wear and tear
Repairing and modernizing the Russian heavy nuclear-powered missile cruiser Pyotr Veliky has been deemed impractical.
Vladimir Maltsev, head of the All-Russian Fleet Support Movement, announced that a special commission examining the ship’s condition had reached this conclusion.
The cruiser is beyond repair. The ship has sustained a certain degree of wear and tear.
Maltsev stressed that this was a preliminary conclusion and that the final decision had yet to be announced.
Pyotr Veliky is the flagship of Russia’s Northern Fleet and the only operational nuclear-powered cruiser of the Project 1144 Orlan class. It is one of the world’s largest warships, excluding aircraft carriers, and one of the Russian fleet’s most powerful surface ships.
