Ugandan authorities say 27 citizens have been killed or gone missing in the war in Ukraine...

Original source

Ugandan authorities said that 27 of the country's citizens who signed contracts with the Russian army have been killed or gone missing in the war in Ukraine.

According to a letter from the Ugandan embassy in Moscow to the foreign ministry in Kampala, the deaths of 11 people have been confirmed, while the bodies of another 16 have yet to be found. Reuters reports that the Ugandan embassy said the information was provided in a diplomatic note from Russia's foreign ministry. The Russian embassy in Kampala, meanwhile, did not respond to journalists' requests for comment.

This news is particularly telling in light of the recent Russia–Africa summit in Moscow, where Vladimir Putin held forth about how much he values and respects his “dear African partners.” In reality, the Kremlin has always viewed and continues to view the African continent solely as a source of raw materials, and now also as a source of cheap labor and “cannon fodder” to continue its senseless war against Ukraine.

☝️As a reminder, in the first nine months of 2026, Russia recruited more foreigners than it did in all of 2025. As of October 1, a total of 45,959 foreigners from 151 countries are fighting or have fought in the Russian army. We know of at least 5,451 mercenaries from 43 African countries, including at least 111 Ugandan citizens. Three Ugandans have also saved their lives by surrendering.
