Back in the summer, we wrote that Russia was stepping up the recruitment of mercenaries in Southeast Asian countries. The lists of foreigners in the Russian armed forces available to us confirm this.

Indonesia has become the latest victim of Russian recruiters. In recent months, the number of its citizens signing contracts with the Russian army has been growing at an explosive rate. In the first nine months of this year alone, at least 283 Indonesians went to fight in the war against Ukraine. By comparison, there were no more than a dozen in the previous three years.

We are publishing a list of 292 citizens of the Republic of Indonesia recruited for the war against Ukraine. The figure is far from complete, and the real number is clearly much higher: Russia has no intention of stopping.

The Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Indonesia to Ukraine, Arif Basalamah, has already responded to this deeply troubling trend. The diplomat met with Dmytro Usov, a brigadier general and secretary of the Coordination Headquarters for the Treatment of Prisoners of War.

Arif Basalamah assured him that the Indonesian government would pay attention to the issue and expressed hope that Indonesia would join the list of countries where Russia's illegal recruitment has been stopped.
