Another masterclass in taking prisoners in the most unconventional places and situations.

During the unique offensive operation “Veles” by the Ukrainian National Guard’s 2nd “Khartiia” Corps (which also involved fighters from the “Freedom of Russia” Legion), Ukrainian troops “cleared” a gas pipeline, advancing 15 kilometers behind enemy lines in the Kupiansk sector. Moving through the underground infrastructure, the Ukrainians encountered dirty, ragged Russian soldiers who had been sitting there for months in horrific conditions on the orders of their unhinged commanders.

For the Russian command, any “pipeline operation” means senselessly and thoughtlessly sacrificing people. Soldiers are shoved underground in the knowledge that most of them will not return. All their escape routes are cut off, and they are driven forward to certain death, which is called “heroism.” The Ukrainians, meanwhile, carefully planned their operation, adding dozens of prisoners to the pool available for exchange.

It might seem that in combat in an enclosed space—a pipe no more than a meter in diameter—the only option would be to kill the enemy. But even in such harsh conditions, Ukrainian troops managed to negotiate with the abandoned Russians and bring them to the surface. Watch the video to see how it happened.

A Way Out Through Captivity

Ukrainian troops brought captured Russian soldiers out of a gas pipeline.

Their command left surrender as the way out.
