Estonian authorities have expelled Russian national Leonid Karabeshkin, who was suspected of ties to Russian intelligence services

Karabeshkin moved to Estonia from St. Petersburg in 2006. From 2022 to 2024, he worked for ERR’s Russian-language editorial team. He also appeared as a guest expert on Russia in Russian-language media and took part in various forums.

According to Estonia’s Internal Security Service (KAPO), the journalist regularly traveled to Russia, where he met with Russian intelligence officers and people acting in their interests. The agency also said he was “connected to influence networks such as CIRP, RuBaltic and Regnum, as well as individuals associated with them.”

Karabeshkin’s last publication for Regnum, which KAPO accused him of having ties to, appeared in 2015. ERR said it had no suspicions about Karabeshkin and that its editorial team had noticed no “influence activity that affected the content of its reporting.”
