Billboards for the “I Want to Live” project have appeared in Ghana's capital, Accra.

Russia is not stopping its recruitment of foreigners for the war against Ukraine; on the contrary, it is stepping it up. Some volunteer to fight in the hope of making money. Others are simply deceived with promises of work or education in Russia.

As of October 2026, we know the personal details of at least 5,451 citizens from 43 African countries who have signed contracts with the Russian Armed Forces. Russia has recruited at least 335 people from Ghana. Dozens of Africans from 18 countries across the continent are already in Ukrainian captivity, and their number continues to grow.

When we launched the “I Want to Live” project in September 2022, we could not have imagined that four years later we would be helping to save the lives of men from Africa and South America. But Russia, having treacherously attacked Ukraine, has failed to defeat its smaller neighbor. Now it is forced to recruit mercenaries en masse in the world's poorest countries so it can keep assaulting Mala Tokmachka for a fifth year.

While Russia sends Africans to their deaths under Ukrainian drones, we give them a chance to survive and return home. The project's website has been translated into four languages so that even those recruited thousands of kilometers from Ukraine can learn how to surrender safely.

The billboards in Accra are another way to bring the truth to those Russia wants to turn into cannon fodder. We want every potential recruit to know that Russian recruiters' promises cannot be trusted, and that taking part in the war against Ukraine could cost them their life.If you or your loved ones have ended up in the Russian army and do not want to fight against Ukraine, there is a way out. The “I Want to Live” project will help you learn how to surrender safely and save your life.
