A Ukrainian soldier who was tried on three “terrorism” charges has died in Russian captivity

Ukrainian prisoner of war Ruslan Romanov, who was tried in Russia on three “terrorism” charges, has died, Mediazona reports.

According to the case record on the Southern District Military Court’s website, the criminal proceedings were discontinued due to the defendant’s death. The defendant’s name is concealed.

He was tried on charges of participating in a terrorist community and an organization designated as terrorist, as well as training for terrorist purposes. These are common charges in cases against prisoners from Azov and Aidar. Such cases are usually heard by the Southern District Military Court in Rostov-on-Don.

A note recording the defendant’s death appeared in the court records on October 15. The previous hearing in the case took place on September 22, although it is unclear whether the defendant participated. The case reached the court in late August.

Mediazona learned that the deceased was named Ruslan Romanovich Romanov and was a Ukrainian serviceman. The details of the charges are unknown; it was not possible to determine when or under what circumstances Romanov was captured, or which unit he served in.
