Indonesian authorities have exposed a criminal group that was recruiting Indonesian citizens to fight in the war against Ukraine.

Police reported 13 suspects in a human trafficking case. At least 58 people fell victim to Russian recruiters. They were offered jobs in logistics, the construction of defensive fortifications, and border security. After arriving in Russia, the men were pressured into signing contracts with the Russian army, then sent to the front after a short training stint at a military range.

The Indonesians were promised a $35,000 signing bonus and a monthly salary of around $3,000. Clearly, none of the payment promises were kept either: the recruits received significantly smaller sums, and some did not receive a single penny.

It also emerged the previous day that Indonesian authorities had formally contacted Moscow through diplomatic channels to demand an end to the recruitment of Indonesian citizens for the war against Ukraine. Notably, this and the exposure of the recruitment network came shortly after a report that an Indonesian had been killed in Donbas and the publication by the “I Want to Live” project of a list of mercenaries from Indonesia.

☝️ We remind foreign nationals: taking part in the war on the side of the Russian army carries a high risk of death or serious injury. If someone is trying to recruit you to take part in combat against Ukraine, or you have already found yourself in the ranks of Russian troops, contact the “I Want to Live” project. We will help you stay alive and surrender safely.
