A module has been discovered on interactive panels installed in Moscow schools that, on a command from a server, turns on the microphone and makes an audio recording of what is happening in the classroom. An analysis of the module has been posted on GitHub.
The module can be installed through the remote administration system of Moscow’s Department of Information Technologies (DIT).
As the researcher notes, there are two versions: a current one and an earlier one. The earlier version was called “Agent for Audio Recording of a Lesson,” while the reference to recording has been removed from the current version, which is called “Agent Ensures the Conduct of a Lesson.”
The package installs a background process that runs without user involvement. It turns on the microphone on its own, records audio, and sends the file to DIT servers, then deletes the copy of the recording from the device.

School Recording Lost Its Name, Not Its Function
A module on Moscow school panels records classroom audio and sends it to department servers.
They removed recording from the name, not the classroom.
