How the “Motherland” continues to deceive young Russians.

Twenty-one-year-old Yaroslav Olegovich Sidorov from Engels was serving his compulsory military service thousands of kilometers from home in Primorye. The young man was conducting signals intelligence, intercepting communications of Chinese(!) soldiers. At some point, his fatherly commanders offered him a contract and the chance to study to become an officer.

Yaroslav agreed, packed his things and flew to Moscow. But instead of being sent to a university from there, he was assigned to the infantry and taken to a training ground. Apparently, a telegram had arrived saying he needed to go and fight in the “special military operation”:

“They told me, either they shoot me now, or I go... I said, ‘But I was promised a place at a higher education institution,’ and they said, ‘You didn’t get in.’”

Naturally, the young man ended up in an assault unit. Yaroslav and a fellow soldier were sent to capture a half-destroyed Ukrainian village. Drones arrived and destroyed their position, and his partner was killed. The former conscript had no choice but to make contact with Ukrainian soldiers and surrender.

It is hardly surprising that, after everything he has been through, Sidorov feels deceived and does not want to return to Russia. The worst part is that there are hundreds, if not thousands, like him: young men who were misled, made to sign contracts and thrown to the slaughter. They could all have been building a bright future for their country, but instead they were sent to die while destroying a neighboring country.
