The liquidation of the Gulag Museum

Radio Meduza

How the authorities liquidated the Gulag History Museum and turned it into a museum about the horrors of Nazism

Moscow’s Gulag History Museum was temporarily closed at the end of 2024 because of “violations of fire safety requirements.” The museum continued operating for another year behind closed doors, and at the beginning of 2026 the authorities announced that its place would now be taken by a Museum of Memory devoted to the genocide of the Soviet people.

What was happening inside the Gulag History Museum while the authorities were deciding its fate? And how are the horrors of Nazism now being presented in its building (with the help of AI slop and bloodied mannequins)?

An audio version of a piece by the independent journalists’ cooperative “Bereg.” You can read the text here.
