Russia has released former Marine Robert Gilman, Reuters reports

The 32-year-old US citizen had been imprisoned since 2022. Gilman was accused of fighting with a police officer at a train station and was sentenced to 4.5 years in a case involving the use of violence against a representative of the authorities. He was serving his sentence in a penal colony in Voronezh.

According to Reuters reporting, Vladimir Putin pardoned Gilman on humanitarian grounds. Earlier, Washington had urged Moscow to release Gilman for treatment in the United States.

The family was concerned about Gilman’s condition; he had complained of torture and injections of mind-altering drugs. His relatives claimed that since June, Gilman had fallen into a dissociative stupor. It was reported that the former Marine was being fed through a tube. His sister suggested that he might be dying.

Reuters sources say that on August 11, Gilman was aboard a State Department plane that was supposed to take him to Washington. One of the agency’s sources said he saw the former prisoner, who was walking and talking.

Russian presidential special representative Kirill Dmitriev confirmed Gilman’s release.
