What damage do Ukrainian strikes inflict on Russian oil refineries? We found another way to look inside the affected plants, from space
Russian oil refineries continue to suffer from Ukrainian strikes. At the same time, it is quite difficult to assess the effectiveness of Ukrainian Armed Forces drone attacks: the authorities do not disclose information about the condition of the plants. So when analyzing the consequences for individual facilities, we usually rely on comments from industry sources and exchange trading data linked to specific refineries. But for our new investigation, we gained access to a new tool: thermal satellite imagery from Constellr. Thanks to this source, it is possible to look inside damaged facilities and understand exactly what equipment was idle, and for how long, after Ukrainian attacks. What did this analysis show? And why does even it fail to answer all questions about the consequences of drone strikes?
