The Ministry of Education has published the state textbook The History of Our Region. Donbas and Novorossiya for 5th to 7th grade schoolchildren in the occupied territories of Ukraine. As Verstka found, it says Ukrainian nationalists bear responsibility for the “destruction of the USSR,” labels the “heroes of Ukraine” after 2014 as “Hitler’s lackeys,” and presents the “SVO” as illustrating the “continuity of generations in defending the Motherland.”
After analyzing the textbook, Verstka found that it covers periods from ancient times to the present day. In the chapters devoted to modern history, the authors focus on the imposition of the Ukrainian language and the actions of “Ukrainian nationalists,” who, the text claims, found no support specifically “in Donbas and Novorossiya.”
“Ukrainian nationalists made enormous efforts to destroy the USSR. The ‘People’s Movement of Ukraine’ and other nationalist organizations received generous funding from abroad to stir up anti-Soviet and anti-Russian sentiment and to organize actions in support of Ukrainian ‘independence.’ But they found no support in Donbas and Novorossiya,” the chapter “In Independent Ukraine” says.
The text says the USSR was destroyed “against the will of the people,” but it ignores the December referendum on Ukraine’s independence, which was supported by a majority of voters, including in Donetsk Oblast (83.90%) and Luhansk Oblast (83.86%).
In the textbook for 6th and 7th grades, to reinforce the material, schoolchildren are invited to look at a picture titled “Heroes Z” and compare the military with WWII front-line soldiers.
“Prove that the feats of the fighters in the special military operation are worthy of the heroes of the Great Patriotic War. How does this picture reflect the continuity of generations in defending the Motherland?” the authors of the textbook write.
Despite the fact that more than ten pages of the textbook are devoted to the “SVO” and its preconditions, Zelensky is mentioned only once, as a “former KVN actor,” after whose election to the presidency “the aggressiveness of the Kyiv regime increased.”
🟪The state textbooks for grades 5-7, The History of Our Region. Donbas and Novorossiya, were included in the updated federal list of textbooks on August 9, and on August 11 they appeared on the website of the Ministry of Education. They will arrive in schools in the occupied territories starting September 1.
