For a person who grew up in a dysfunctional family and then ended up in an orphanage, the future in Putin’s Russia is fairly predictable: crime, prison, a contract for war. That is exactly the path Stepan Tkachuk went through.

After finishing 9 grades, he got into theft and drugs. To avoid being held responsible for his crimes and serving a sentence until age 37, Stepan joined the Russian army, where he was quickly sent into an assault. He got lucky twice, and that is exactly how many times he fell captive to the Ukrainian military. After returning to Russia in a prisoner exchange, Stepan fully experienced all the “care” of his home country: without leave, treatment, or rehabilitation, he was sent into assaults again.
