In Volgograd, sports blogger Svyatoslav Kovalenko was detained for desecrating the monument to the “Heroes of the Battle of Stalingrad”

On July 24, he threw a 5,000-ruble banknote into the pool by the “Stand to the Death” monument on Mamayev Kurgan and suggested that visitors to the memorial retrieve it, the Russian Investigative Committee said.

A second detainee in the case, pretending to be a random passerby, jumped into the water after the money. All of this was filmed on a mobile phone camera, and the video was later published on social media. Kovalenko then said the video had been filmed completely spontaneously.

A criminal case has been opened against the bloggers under Paragraphs “a” and “b” of Part 2 of Article 243.4 of the Russian Criminal Code (desecration of military graves and a memorial structure, committed by a group of persons by prior conspiracy).

They face up to 5 years in prison. The investigation is insisting on their arrest.
