Nikita Uvarov was detained at 14, and today he is 21. Here is how a third of his life has passed

2020. Nikita is 14. Security forces gain access to the teenager’s correspondence and learn that he, together with other schoolchildren, built an FSB building in Minecraft and was planning to blow it up as a joke. They are detained.

2021. Nikita is 15. The charges against him are dropped and he is released from custody. Nikita finishes 9th grade and enrolls in a polytechnic college.

2022. Nikita is 16. He is sentenced to 5 years in a general-regime penal colony for “training for terrorism,” as well as the illegal manufacture and storage of explosives. Uvarov does not admit guilt.

2023. Nikita is 17. The Supreme Court upholds the sentence, rejecting the defense appeal.

2024. Nikita is 18. He is transferred from a juvenile penal colony to a general-regime penal colony.

February 2026. Nikita is 20. He is supposed to be released in a month, but a new criminal case is opened against him. He is accused of involvement in the nonexistent AUE movement (“Prisoners’ Criminal Unity”), which in Russia has extremist status.

August 2026. Nikita turns 21. His support group learns of an additional episode in the charges in the second case: involving a person in extremist activity.

Taken together, the two sets of charges now mean Nikita Uvarov could face up to 12 years in prison.
