It looks like there will be even more military training in schools starting this school year. Can students skip it, and how should they do it properly?

Starting September 1, Russian schools are expected to double the number of hours devoted to military training. The new measure would split the existing subject "Fundamentals of Security and Defense of the Motherland" (OBZR) into two equal parts; one of them would become a mandatory course, "Initial Military Training." As part of it, among other things, schoolchildren are expected to be taught the basics of operating UAVs.

The draft order has been published on legal resources. The document has not yet been adopted, but that could happen at the last moment.

Together with human rights defenders and lawyers from "Call to Conscience," we look at why schoolchildren are being given even more military training, whether it will become harder to miss such classes, and what parents should do if the school insists on attendance.
