The SBU said that the deputy commander of the Russian Volunteer Corps cooperated with the FSB. Kaplunov replied that they want to discredit not only him, but also the head of the Ukrainian president’s office

According to the Ukrainian security service, Stepan Kaplunov was supposed to “prepare an assassination attempt on one of the leaders of the Russian opposition movement, who was due to arrive in Ukraine at that time.”

In the SBU statement, published on the agency’s website, it is noted that this serviceman, acting on orders from Russian intelligence services, was allegedly supposed, for monetary compensation, to organize the killings of other Ukrainian military personnel as well.

The SBU published a video in which Kaplunov gives a confession, as well as what it says is his correspondence with Russian intelligence services.

In addition, the agency clarified that the shootout with HUR officers, which the media had reported on earlier, took place during the collection of evidence in this criminal case.

Kaplunov himself later published a video address in which he said that SBU officers had “like bandits” abducted him, subjected him to physical and psychological pressure, and also, according to Kaplunov, tried to plant “unknown items” in his apartment. According to him, all of this was done in order to discredit Timur special unit deputy commander Dmytro Ivanov and the direct head of the Ukrainian president’s office, Kyrylo Budanov.
