Latvia and Lithuania are discussing a possible ban on exporting Russian grain through their ports

Reuters reports this, citing senior officials from the two countries.

The reason for intending to discuss such a possibility was a sharp increase in shipments after Ukrainian attacks disabled a significant part of Russian port infrastructure on the Baltic Sea.

Latvia’s government intends to discuss introducing a full ban on the export of Russian grain through the country’s territory, while Lithuania said the use of ports for such shipments is “no longer acceptable.” Officials there did not specify which measures the authorities are considering.

According to Prime Minister Mindaugas Sinkevicius, grain exports from Russia using Lithuanian infrastructure “contradict the values” of the country. He added that the restrictions would not affect grain transit between Russia’s main territory and the Kaliningrad region.

Latvian Prime Minister Andris Kulbergs added that Ukraine’s special services have data on the preparation, through the Baltic states, of large grain shipments illegally taken from occupied territories. He instructed Latvian security agencies to work with Kyiv to develop a mechanism for blocking such batches.
