Latvia plans to introduce a complete ban on bus services to Russia and Belarus from 2027

It is expected that this will also affect transit routes, Delfi writes. The proposal was prepared and submitted for government review by Latvia’s Ministry of Transport.

At present, one regular bus route remains between Latvia and Russia, with daily trips operated by Ecolines. The permit issued to the company is valid until January 9, and the authorities do not intend to extend it. Ecolines has already estimated losses from the closure of routes to Russia and Belarus at around 4 million euros a year.

Irregular passenger bus transport to Russia and Belarus has been banned in Latvia from November 1, 2025, to October 31, 2026. The ban is intended to be extended for another year.

Latvian authorities previously said such measures were necessary because those traveling to Russia could “face recruitment.” At the same time, passengers will still be able to reach Russia via Estonia and Lithuania with transfers, or use minibuses.
