Seizing assets in corruption cases from heirs is lawful, Russia’s prosecutor general says

According to Alexander Gutsan, prosecutors’ litigation work to turn corruption assets over to the state has been “growing for several years now,” although it has sparked debate about “the inviolability of property, the need to take statutes of limitation into account, and other issues.”

However, property rights do not extend to assets acquired through criminal means, Gutsan explained.

“Moreover, regardless of how long they have been owned or whether they have been transferred to third parties. Even after the death of the corrupt official, they are subject to seizure from his heirs and transfer to state revenue,” the prosecutor general said.

He added that this “fully corresponds to the spirit of the law and justice.”
