A Russian man who swam from Kaliningrad Region to Lithuania seeking asylum was returned to Russia

Lithuanian border guards found the roughly 60-year-old man on September 17 at about 1:50 p.m. on the Lithuanian bank of the Neman River.

During questioning, he said he was being persecuted in Russia over his activity on social media. After checks, Lithuanian authorities decided not to allow him to enter. That same day, the Russian citizen was sent back to Kaliningrad Region through the Panemune border crossing.

Lithuania’s border guard service said it had found no evidence of an immediate threat to the man or other circumstances that could have served as grounds for admitting him into the country.
