AfD plans to hold talks with the Kremlin on bringing Russian gas back to Germany — Reuters

The leadership of the far-right party Alternative for Germany has begun preparations for talks on resuming supplies of Russian gas to Germany, Reuters writes, citing two sources.

The meeting could take place as early as March 2027. AfD co-chairs Alice Weidel and Tino Chrupalla and Russian Direct Investment Fund head Kirill Dmitriev are expected to take part. However, the agency notes, it will happen only if Russia and Ukraine have by then agreed on the terms of a peace settlement.

The parties are expected to discuss the issue of resuming operation of the Russian Nord Stream gas pipeline. At the same time, any attempts to restart the pipeline will be met with resistance in Germany, the agency writes.

The meeting of AfD representatives will be symbolic in nature, since the party is not part of Germany’s federal government, Reuters notes. Nevertheless, AfD hopes the talks will help show voters its competence in foreign policy issues and the government’s inability to solve the problem of high energy prices.
