Russian strikes shut down plants that produced 90% of Ukraine’s steel

Ukraine’s three largest remaining metallurgical plants have stopped operating after Russian missile strikes. Together, they accounted for 90% of steel production in the country, the Financial Times writes, citing the companies Metinvest and ArcelorMittal.

Ballistic missiles hit the blast furnaces of two Metinvest plants and ArcelorMittal’s facility in Kryvyi Rih. Seventeen workers were killed in the attacks.

“As of today, Ukraine no longer has a steel industry,” said Oleksandr Vodoviz, head of the CEO’s office at Metinvest. In his view, the Russian military “knew everything about the plants” and knew “where to strike.”

More than 15,000 people work at the plants that have been shut down. Metinvest warned that the halt in production will affect related industries and lead to a significant drop in tax revenues. It is unknown how long repairs to the facilities will take.
