Lithuania’s parliament approved an amendment allowing the deployment of nuclear weapons

Lithuania’s Seimas (parliament) backed the repeal of the constitutional ban on deploying weapons of mass destruction, LRT reports.

Ninety-nine lawmakers supported the constitutional amendment, which would repeal the provision banning the deployment on Lithuanian territory of weapons of mass destruction and military bases of foreign states. Another 13 lawmakers voted against it, and five abstained.

For the amendment to be finally approved, parliament must hold two more votes three months apart. The first is planned for October 6, and the final one for January 12, 2027.

In June 2026, Lithuanian authorities confirmed that they were holding talks on deploying nuclear weapons on their territory. The Financial Times wrote that the discussions concerned American bombers capable of carrying nuclear warheads.

The Kremlin said that Russian nuclear weapons would be aimed at Lithuania if the country’s authorities deployed nuclear arsenals on their territory.
