The “I Want to Live” project is publishing an interview with a Wagner PMC mercenary who first fought in Mali, and then, because of money and “signing bonuses,” went to Ukraine, where he was captured.

In Mali, he witnessed Russian war crimes against the local population. According to his account, Wagner PMC instructors trained newly arrived mercenaries on Malian civilians.

A TNT charge was tied to a local man’s leg and detonated, after which they practiced applying a tourniquet on him. Then they shot him in the arm so they could again practice stopping bleeding. In the end, the man was left to bleed out.

Another prisoner was forced to be used as a “training dummy” for practicing knife strikes to the chest. And during another tactical medicine lesson, they began chopping a prisoner’s leg with an axe around the knee.

According to the mercenary, captive local residents were also tortured at Russian strongpoints. He describes brutal abuse and torture used against detainees.

This is not an isolated case. International human rights organizations have previously documented extrajudicial executions, the burning of homes, enforced disappearances, and attacks on civilians in Mali involving Russian forces in Mali.
