⚡️ More than 150 human rights defenders, public figures and organizations urged Kazakhstan not to extradite Yulia Yemelyanova and Mansur Movlayev to Russia

Yulia Yemelyanova and Mansur Movlayev lost their cassation appeals against the denial of asylum in Kazakhstan, meaning the risk of their extradition to Russia is now extremely high. More than 150 human rights defenders, journalists, public and political figures, as well as civil society organizations, signed a joint statement demanding that their extradition be stopped.

“What is especially concerning is the possibility that additional, more serious charges may be brought against them, including charges related to treason. This tactic — using extradition requests based on fabricated charges — is regularly used by Russian law enforcement agencies against activists and opposition politicians because of their anti-war stance,”

the statement says.

Yemelyanova previously worked with Alexei Navalny’s St. Petersburg headquarters and took part in anti-war and human rights initiatives. Movlayev criticized the Chechen authorities and spoke about human rights violations in the republic.

The violence they have already endured is particularly alarming. Yemelyanova was subjected to ill-treatment after being detained in Russia. Movlayev’s relatives were subjected to abductions and violence, and he himself twice tried to kill himself while in custody.

🔹 We urge the authorities of Kazakhstan to stop the extradition of Yulia Yemelyanova and Mansur Movlayev, comply with the country’s international obligations, and allow them to leave safely for a third country.

The statement was signed, among others, by Lev Ponomarev, Oleg Orlov, Karinna Moskalenko, Sergei Davidis, Ksenia Fadeyeva, Marina Litvinovich, Andrei Pivovarov, Margarita Kuchusheva, as well as OVD-Info, Ark, Russie-Libertés, Russian Democratic Society UK, and dozens of other human rights and anti-war organizations from different countries.
