Russia’s destruction of bridges across the Dnipro could turn into a “logistical nightmare” not only for Kyiv, but for the entire country — NYT
The publication notes that destroying the bridges is difficult; it would require many precise hits. But constant strikes could weaken the bridges’ support structures, forcing authorities to close them indefinitely to avoid a collapse.
The result would be a logistical nightmare for Kyiv and the whole country. An enormous amount of food and equipment is transported across the capital’s bridges over the Dnipro. If they are closed, there will be very few alternatives,
The New York Times writes.
One road bridge crosses the river north of Kyiv. To the south, the nearest bridge is about 145 km away. Other bridges are located even farther downstream, but using them would mean an enormous detour, and their proximity to the southern front makes them even more vulnerable to Russian attacks, the NYT notes.
The newspaper also writes that in the first days of the war, Ukrainian authorities considered blowing up Kyiv’s bridges to stop Russian troops advancing on the left bank, but this proved unnecessary.
🔵Over the past three days, Russia has attacked bridges in Kyiv six times. Before that, the Pivdennyi Bridge had come under attack; on Saturday, the Pivnichnyi Bridge was hit, and two people were injured. Authorities have restricted or completely blocked traffic on five of the city’s six road bridges.
