Yakovenko was sentenced to five years in prison in 2025: he was accused of preparing to join the Freedom of Russia Legion.

Yakovenko was serving his sentence in a prison in Yelets when another case was opened against him: because he had allegedly called for killing “Russian soldiers” in his poems. At the same time, Yakovenko’s relatives doubted that the poems had really been written by him. After that, he was transferred to the Krasnodar pretrial detention center.

While still in prison, Yakovenko began suffering severe headaches and bouts of high blood pressure, and his eyesight deteriorated. At the same time, according to Memorial, it was not possible to secure a medical examination.
