In November 2023, 14-year-old Anna set off a firecracker on a vacant lot, recorded it on video, and posted it in a Telegram chat where teenagers discussed weapons. Because of this, she was accused of promoting terrorist activity and manufacturing improvised explosive devices with the aim of attacking a school. Later, an expert examination established that the firecracker was not an explosive device.

For more than a year and a half, Anna was held in a pretrial detention center, where she was tortured by her cellmates: she was raped, beaten, and humiliated. Security officials knew about the torture but did nothing to stop it. Under pressure, the schoolgirl attempted suicide, and she was placed in a psychiatric hospital.

Anna’s case drew public attention. In May 2025, we ran a public campaign: concerned people sent 7,139 appeals to the Investigative Committee of the Russian Federation through our Dyatel service. And it helped! Soon Anna was released home to her mother under travel restrictions. The Investigative Committee began an internal review and found multiple violations.

In June 2025, a criminal case was opened against Anna’s cellmates under articles on torturing a minor and violent acts of a sexual nature. In September 2026, investigators began a separate review of colony staff: they are accused of abuse of authority over their inaction.

The human rights organization Team Against Torture is helping Anna Zhuravleva hold her cellmates accountable and bring the case against the Federal Penitentiary Service staff who allowed the abuse to court. They are raising 240,000 rubles to pay for six months of a lawyer’s work.
