Russian authorities asked the U.S. to lift sanctions as part of talks on an “energy truce,” The Kyiv Independent writes, citing Ukrainian and American sources. According to the outlet’s sources, Russian authorities are also trying to link the lifting of sanctions to a truce in the Black Sea.

Ukrainian officials familiar with the negotiations said they do not know exactly which restrictions Moscow wants lifted. A European diplomatic source, for his part, said it could involve returning Russia’s control over frozen assets.

If Russia receives these funds, he stressed, “the likelihood that they will be used for escalation is almost guaranteed.”

Ukrainian authorities insist that the energy truce must be mutual, and that Russia should not receive any preferences in exchange for refraining from strikes.
