“This is purely about the U.S. elections.” Kirill Rogov on Trump and Putin’s diesel deal

On the evening of October 9, U.S. President Donald Trump spoke about another phone call with Vladimir Putin. He placed the main emphasis on the fact that he had managed to get Russia to begin major diesel supplies to global markets “immediately.” That includes the United States, where Russian fuel has not been shipped directly since 2022. In total, the volume is around five million tons.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky called the agreement “gifts to Putin” and urged Trump to increase pressure on Russia. After the deal was announced, on the night of October 10, Ukraine’s Armed Forces continued attacking Russian oil refineries.

“The results are outwardly favorable for Putin, but in substance they are not as significant as many people think today,” says Kirill Rogov, founder of the expert and analytical project Re:Russia.

On Dozhd, he explained what benefits both sides will try to gain from this deal, and how Ukraine may react to it. More details are on our website.
