The U.S. proposed unfreezing assets for Russia and selling part of Lukoil in exchange for a partial ceasefire, NYT reports

American negotiators offered Russia three economic incentives in exchange for a limited ceasefire covering energy infrastructure or the sea, The New York Times writes, citing officials familiar with the course of the talks.

The proposals were made by Trump's special envoys Jared Kushner and Steve Witkoff as part of negotiations that began in late September on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly.

First, Washington offered to unblock billions from Russian sovereign assets frozen in the West. According to the sources, the money was viewed as an advance payment for a partial ceasefire. Last year, when a similar idea was discussed, the amount in question was up to

00 billion.

Second, the United States returned to a plan for a multibillion-dollar deal to sell parts of Lukoil to a group of Middle Eastern investors, some of whom have business ties to the American negotiators.

Third, the Americans again proposed allowing Belarus to export potash fertilizers.

🔵Kyiv, as the NYT writes, did not directly reject any of the proposals, but demanded safeguards. For example, mirror payments to Ukraine from frozen assets, or guarantees of additional military aid in the event of any ceasefire violation. The outlet notes that Ukrainian officials were struck by how far Kushner and Witkoff went in their proposals to Russia.
