Yandex recommended that taxi drivers download Google Maps after attacks on data centers
After navigation outages caused by strikes on the company’s data centers, the Yandex Taxi service recommended that its drivers use Google Maps or the navigation app Waze, which is also owned by Google. Two taxi drivers from Yekaterinburg and Moscow told Verstka about this.
A notification suggesting the use of alternative navigation services appeared in the Yandex Pro driver app.
“Navigation inside Pro may temporarily not work. To use navigation on orders, install Waze or Google Maps. If one of the apps is already installed, you do not need to download the second one,” the message says.
In addition, Yandex advised taxi drivers to download an offline map of their city. The company explained that it “will help keep access to the map and some Pro functions, even if navigation temporarily does not work.”
Over the past several days, both drivers and passengers from different regions have been complaining en masse about outages in Yandex Taxi. In particular, problems with navigation and GPS were reported from St. Petersburg and Adygea.
As a taxi driver from Yekaterinburg told Verstka, after the service outages he can no longer view his order history, and ride statuses update with a delay. For example, while already carrying out a second order, a driver may still appear in the system as having set off for the first one, even though he marks his arrival, the start, and the completion of the trip on time.
The Verstka source’s colleagues also complain about “phantom orders”: they would arrive at an address and mark themselves as being there, but passengers would say by phone that they had not ordered a taxi.
In addition, the loyalty program stopped working, and bonuses for taxi drivers are not working either, which has also hit their earnings.
