A journalist from Japan has been detained on Sakhalin on suspicion of espionage

A correspondent for the newspaper Hokkaido Shimbun has been detained on suspicion of working for one of Japan’s intelligence services, TASS reports, citing the FSB. The detainee is a Japanese national. His name has not been disclosed.

The FSB claims that he was collecting information about defense capabilities: about the number of mobilized participants in the war in Ukraine on the Kuril Islands. The journalist was detained in Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk on the eve of his departure from Russia and taken to Moscow.

According to Ostorozhno, Novosti, the person in question is 34-year-old Yuki Imai. He arrived in Primorsky Krai in the summer and visited, among other places, Vladivostok and Nakhodka. During the trip, he interviewed Russian-speaking residents of Japan. Yuki was also interested in life in the Far East, issues related to the Soviet-Japanese War of 1945, and relations between Russia and Japan.

The Lefortovsky Court arrested the journalist on October 13.
