From an agent report by Colonel M.N. Volkov, head of the Turkestan district security department. July 19, 1916:

“At first they began stripping the Kyrgyz of money, [...] and now they want to take away the healthiest element of the Muslims aged 19 to 40. To send them to the theater of military operations, where they will be put to work ahead of Russian soldiers digging trenches, as a result of which both Russian and German troops will kill all the Muslims, and then only old men and women will remain among the Kyrgyz people”More than a hundred years later, the Russian Federation continues the “glorious” imperial traditions, sending people from Central Asia to a war that is alien to them. Kyrgyz, Kazakhs, Uzbeks, Tajiks, and Turkmens are needed by Russians to do their “dirty work” for them. In this case, to die in the front ranks for Moscow’s interests. They are lured into the Russian army through deception, threats of deportation, or the banal lure of a “long ruble,” with promises of work and citizenship.

At best, for those who believed the recruiters, it ends in captivity. But in most cases their families will never see them again and will never learn what happened to them. And even those who survive receive none of what was promised, losing even the ability to return home.

Independent journalist from Kyrgyzstan Adil Turdukulov did not merely speak with Central Asian natives held in captivity who had fought on Russia’s side. He drew very precise and grim parallels between the events of the First World War and today’s war.
