Japan’s Foreign Ministry lodged a protest with the Russian ambassador over the detention of a Japanese journalist on Sakhalin. Maria Zakharova said that this arrest was not the first such case and that “something like this happened recently”

Japan’s Foreign Ministry summoned Russian Ambassador Nikolai Nozdrev and demanded that Russia provide all information about the detention of journalist Yuki Imai, ensure that he receives “fair and impartial treatment,” and allow contact with him. There has been no contact with him so far, Japanese Chief Cabinet Secretary Minoru Kihara said.

Earlier on October 14, the country’s foreign minister, Toshimitsu Motegi, said that Japan had asked Russia for an explanation regarding the situation.

Meanwhile, Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova claims this is not the first such case and that “something similar happened quite recently.”
