Five Ukrainian servicemen were shot dead in the Kharkiv region. Prosecutors are investigating whether Russian citizens were involved in the killings
Three independent sources confirmed the killings to the local outlet Dumka, and the Office of the Prosecutor General of Ukraine later confirmed them as well.
According to the outlet’s sources, the incident took place on October 13 near Kharkiv, in a private house where servicemen from the Ukrainian Armed Forces’ 72nd Brigade were recovering after returning from their positions. According to the outlet, all the servicemen were killed by gunshots to the head. One other serviceman was wounded.
Prosecutors have opened a pretrial investigation. Kharkiv Regional Prosecutor’s Office spokesperson Valeria Chyrina said that a search for the attacker was underway.
A statement posted by the 72nd Brigade on social media said that, according to preliminary information, “individuals who are probably citizens of the Russian Federation” may have been involved in the killings. The search for those involved in the shooting is continuing, the brigade’s statement said.
The Prosecutor General’s Office told Dumka that prosecutors were investigating several versions of what happened, including possible involvement by a Russian sabotage and reconnaissance group in the shooting.
At the same time, the BBC reports that Russian servicemen escaped from captivity in the Kharkiv region. According to one officially unconfirmed version, a Russian serviceman who escaped from captivity may have been involved in the killings.
