Ukrainian Strikes on Yandex Data Centers Could Set Back AI Development in Russia by Years. Russia Never Competed With the U.S. and China in This Field — and Now It Will Probably Fall Behind Kazakhstan Too

Ukrainian attacks on Yandex data centers have affected the key growth areas of Russia’s leading IT company: its search service and AI.

All three Yandex supercomputers — Chervonenkis, Lyapunov, and Galushkin — were probably seriously damaged by fires and smoke: soot may have entered the electronics through the outside-air cooling system. Cleaning could take months, while replacing damaged NVIDIA chips could take years because of equipment shortages.

Before the start of the full-scale war, Chervonenkis ranked 19th out of 500 in the global supercomputer rankings. Russia now risks falling behind Kazakhstan in the AI race as early as November.

The publication T-invariant spoke with computing systems experts and explains how extensive the consequences of the Ukrainian military’s attacks could be for Yandex both as a business and as Russia’s IT leader.
