An anti-migrant raid has begun at Sennoy Market in central St. Petersburg. Dozens of people have been detained, and some were served with military summonses

A source in the security services told RIA Novosti about the operation. He described the raid as a “large-scale inspection of foreign nationals’ compliance with migration law.”

“Several hundred law enforcement officers cordoned off a block on Moskovsky Prospekt near Sennoy Market, where a prayer room with as many as a thousand worshippers is located,” the agency’s source said.

According to him, representatives of military enlistment offices are also taking part in the inspection: they are assessing whether citizens who recently obtained Russian citizenship registered for military service on time.

“So far, several dozen people have been identified and served with summonses ordering them to report to a military enlistment office to register for military service,” he added.

Law enforcement officers have so far detained several dozen worshippers carrying migration documents issued in violation of the law.

Eyewitnesses told Fontanka that law enforcement officers are asking whether people have registration documents, work permits and migration cards.

Law enforcement officers are also checking whether the prayer room’s activities comply with legislation governing religious rites, as well as inspecting numerous hostels and ethnic cafés located in neighboring buildings.
