A Moscow school student was accused of “sympathizing with an enemy country” over a drawing of the Statue of Liberty in art class.

The mother of the 12-year-old student from Novye Vatutinki told Ostorozhno Novosti that the children had been assigned to draw any monument during the lesson. When her son drew the Statue of Liberty, the teacher totally lost it—she said that the United States “sponsors wars against us” and demanded that the kid draw “The Motherland Calls” or “Worker and Kolkhoz Woman” instead.

When the student refused, the teacher asked him to draw a sword in Liberty’s hand instead of a torch to “show what kind of country they have.” The student refused again, at which point the teacher began publicly questioning him about his political views.

When the student told his mother about it, she contacted his homeroom teacher, who called what had happened in art class “patriotic education.”

Art Class Became a Loyalty Inspection

A teacher demanded another monument and questioned a student's political views.

Patriotic education began by policing a child's drawing.
