“I tried to say that I would take her back no matter what.” When the full-scale war began, thousands of Ukrainian children ended up in Russia, unable to return home. This is the story of a family from the Kharkiv region who were separated on February 24 itself

In October, Meduza’s publishing house released the book “Stolen Childhood: How Russia Abducts Ukrainian Children — and How Ukrainians Bring Them Home.” It was written by journalists Nina Nazarova (Russia) and Svyatoslav Khomenko (Ukraine) and published with assistance from the StraightForward Foundation. Since the very beginning of the full-scale war, the authors had been following how thousands of children from Ukrainian territories devastated by the Russian army were being taken deep into Russia. They managed to contact some of the separated families, which gave rise to the idea for this book. It describes in detail four scenarios under which the illegal deportation of children took place. One of the subjects of “Stolen Childhood” is Veronika from the Kharkiv region, who left the occupied territory with a relative and was unable to return to her mother. We are publishing the full chapter “Veronika Hides in the Basement,” about how and where the girl experienced the outbreak of the war.
