“Maybe you could sign a contract—at least then you’d be of some use.” In Red Square, a 19-year-old woman was detained over a pin reading “This Too Shall Pass”

On October 16, a 19-year-old woman named Yana was detained in Red Square, according to the “For Yekaterina Duntsova” initiative group. Federal Protective Service officers stopped her because of a pin bearing the words “This Too Shall Pass.”

Patrol officers then approached her, informed her that she was being detained, removed the pin, and took her bag, phone, and documents. Yana was first taken to the Kitay-Gorod police station and then to the Arbat station.

According to the group, she was held there for several hours, insulted, and subjected to psychological pressure. During the detention, the group says, she was also invited to sign a military contract: “Maybe you could sign a contract—at least then you’d be of some use.”

The young woman was released by the evening, but just half an hour later, she began receiving calls demanding that she return to the police station. The following day, October 17, she was summoned again.

Officers from the Center for Combating Extremism then arrived at the station. They examined the contents of Yana’s phone and found a saved song by the band Pornofilmy. Because of this, they threatened to draw up reports against her under several statutes, including the law on “discrediting” the army.

In addition, according to the group, law enforcement officers pressured the young woman to sign “voluntary consent” to a search of her apartment, which she refused to do. She is now in contact with human rights advocates.
