“Just don’t let the damn Russians into Europe.” Latvian prime minister urges Europe to ban tourist visas for Russians

Latvian Prime Minister Andris Kulbergs urged EU countries to stop issuing tourist visas to Russians, arguing that such a move would help prevent new hybrid threats from Russia.

Just don’t let the damn Russians into Europe Why the hell are we still issuing visas to Russians who act as aggressors and organizers, [when] the source of hybrid threats is quite clearly there—and we continue issuing visas simply because some countries make money from it?

Kulbergs said in an interview with the Financial Times.

According to him, Latvia faces hybrid threats “every day.” He also said that without tighter border controls, Europe could see a repeat of attacks involving the Novichok nerve agent. “Every country must take a tough stance on this issue. This is prevention,” he added.

According to the FT, calls for tighter restrictions have intensified in part following an August incident involving an explosives-laden drone at Leipzig Airport, for which Germany blamed Moscow. A Belarusian citizen who received a tourist visa in Italy is being investigated for possible involvement in the incident, the newspaper noted.
