Direct mayoral elections abolished in Khabarovsk
Direct mayoral elections have been abolished in Khabarovsk
This was announced by the press service of the Khabarovsk Krai Legislative Duma.
“In accordance with federal law, deputies of the City Duma will elect the city head from candidates put forward by the regional governor,” the statement said.
It is claimed that the amendments successfully passed public hearings involving city residents.
Andrei Beloglazov, speaker of the Khabarovsk City Duma, said that “exactly 123 years ago, Khabarovsk residents lived under a similar charter, when councilors elected the city head.”
He promised that Khabarovsk residents would participate in the “development of the regional capital.”
Khabarovsk had remained one of three major cities whose mayors were elected in direct elections, Vedomosti writes. After Khabarovsk Mayor Sergei Kravchuk became a State Duma deputy, only two such city heads remain — in Abakan and Anadyr.
