Philippines – Ryazan – Kostiantynivka. What could drive a sane person to travel such a route?
Philippines – Ryazan – Kostiantynivka. What could drive a sane person to travel such a route?
Malambakhe Sabtar Sabanal is a Philippine citizen who decided to make money from the war against Ukraine. Deliberately. There was no deception or coercion by Russian recruiters. In June 2026, he signed a contract with the Russian army; in early July, he was already on the front line; and at the end of July, he was killed in an assault in Ukraine’s Donbas. Everything happened very quickly, ingloriously, and senselessly.
His documents and personal belongings have now fallen into the hands of Ukrainian intelligence. Among them is that very one-year contract, which turned out to be his sentence. Photos with other mercenaries from Southeast Asia were found on Malambakhe’s phone, indicating that Russian “merchants of death” are actively operating in the region. Recall that one Philippine citizen is already in Ukrainian captivity.
We strongly urge citizens of countries where Russia recruits mercenaries to heed our calls and under no circumstances trust Russians. To them, you are expendable material meant to advance on Ukrainian positions in the front ranks. Even if you survive the war, criminal liability will await you upon returning home, since the laws of your countries most likely prohibit this kind of activity. If you are captured, Russia will not take you back in an exchange, just as it has never taken back a single foreigner. Whichever way you look at it—nothing but downsides.
